How to Restore Your Confidence with Acne Clinics

January 30th, 2009 2 comments

By: Darrin Reservitz
For many people the battle against acne is an easy one. They are able to make a quick trip to the pharmacy or local store and pick up Neutrogena multi vitamin acne treatment or any other over the counter acne treatment and be done with it. But dealing with acne is not that easy for some people. Those who struggle with severe acne tend to go up the ranks of treatment to prescription drugs then seek the help of acne clinics.

If you have tried everything from homemade acne treatments such as honey and apple masks, as well as most of the over the counter items that you’ve found on the store shelves, it may be time to call in a little extra help in your fight against the outbreaks. While your general doctor may be able to offer a prescription or two, often those don’t work well on severe acne cases, and you need to see professionals in this arena.

At acne clinics, acne is what the deal with. That’s it. That means they have seen more cases of severe acne than any general doctor would have, and also have tried more ways to treat acne, and found more successful ways, than general doctors.

For most people who visit acne clinics, they will be given a multi-faceted approach to beating their acne problem. This differs from the human intuition to try one thing at a time then move to the next when it doesn’t work.

Acne clinics usually battle acne from a number of different angles”

Medicines
Lasers
Restoration
Ongoing Skin Care

Medicines - The first approach acne clinics utilize is medicines. Instead of one medicine at a time, they often offer a 2-tiered approach. The first medication will deal with the topical problems of oily skin and killing the bacteria on the surface that are causing the acne outbreaks. The second medication is an internal attack on the acne causing agents inside your body.

Lasers - Advances in technology have become advances in treatment at today’s acne clinics. Using a laser on acne prone areas, the glands that are over-producing oil, encouraging acne outbreaks, are controlled. Additionally the heat of the laser can help in killing off acne-causing bacteria.

Restoration - Eventually you will be at the top of your uphill battle against acne, but probably still have scars and blemishes from those old outbreaks. This is where restoration comes in. Acne clinics are experienced in the methods to restore your skin to look clear again.

Ongoing Skin Care - After all the work you have put in to get your skin back to the way you remember it before acne struck, you want to be able to keep it that way. Acne clinics often offer education in ongoing skin care as well as facial therapies that you can receive at the facility to keep your skin acne-free in the years to come.

Unlike the old days when those with severe cases of acne had to live with the consequences, today’s acne clinics have a number of new tools at their disposal to help you gain the upper hand over your acne problem and remove it from your life.

Clear skin - it takes more than just good genes

January 30th, 2009 No comments

By: Luat Tran Van
Growing up, I always thought my grandmother had soft and beautiful skin. Well, I was right. Even well into her seventies, Grandma Susie still has amazingly soft and nearly wrinkle-free skin. The other day, I asked about her skin care regimen and how she kept looking so young. Her answer? She washes her face three times a day with warm water and a clean wash cloth. No soap, no chemicals at all!

But as we all know, most people are not as lucky as Grandma Susie when it comes to skin care. For a lot of us, it takes work and help to simply get clear skin. I will not even bring up what it takes to get soft and smooth skin or to keep back the signs of age.

For me, I am well into my thirties now with pretty decent skin (thanks to Grandma Susie and her genes). Although, every once in a while, acne rears its ugly “black-head” usually when I am stressed or eating poorly. But most of my acne problems start when I work out heavily. It seems the more I sweat, the more I break out.

I tend to break out more where my hairline meets my forehead, around my nose and under my chin. My break outs do not last long, but they are noticeable especially to me. It is really tough to be taken seriously as an adult when a teenage problem creeps up on my forehead. That is why I really try to take care of my face when I am working out, stressing or indulging in that greasy Double-Double from IN-N-OUT! And while soap and astringents were my cure of choice in my twenties, At this age (37) I look for options that are not so harsh on my skin, but will show positive results.

After a recent break out, a friend recommended that I give Obagi Skin Care a try. So, I logged onto Obagi Skin Care to learn more. Once their, I found a product that looked for me … Obagi CLENZIderm M.D.. There are two types of Obagi CLENZIderm. There’s Normal-to-Dry Skin and Normal-to-Oily Skin. Given my sometimes oily skin type, I chose the latter.

From the website, I learned that using CLENZIderm M.D. every day, people like myself can reduce the visible signs of acne in as little as two weeks and prevent new breakouts, allowing me to maintain clear and healthy skin.

Here is how it works over the two week period for Normal-to-Oily Skin

Step 1: Cleanse with Daily Care Foaming Cleanser

You will start by wetting your face with warm water, and squeezing out a dime-sized amount of Daily Care Foaming Cleanser into the palm of your hand. For 20 to 30 seconds, you will lather and gently your entire face before rinsing and pat drying your face. Before starting step 2, you will need to wait about 15 minutes before

Step 2: Pore Therapy

Following Step 1, grab a cotton ball or pad, moisten with the Pore Therapy and apply over your face. Be careful to avoid your eyes, nose and mouth. Once your done, let it dry … don’t rinse off. Make sure your entire face is dry before moving to step 3.

Step 3: Serum Gel

During Step 3, apply one pump of Serum Gel onto the cotton pad provided in your kit. Begin applying the gel evenly to entire face. Of course, keep it away from your eyes or in nose and mouth. Once you’re done, make sure to wash your hands … but don’t take any of the medication off your face. People with sensitive skin will feel some slight tingling or burning. That’s ok, it will minimize once you use it a few more times.

Although I don not have dry skin, I understand it’s a similar process for Steps 1 but things do change slightly in Step 2 and 3.

If you follow this regimen, daily … you’ll notice a big difference in the next two weeks. Although I have heard similar claims from other products, I found that Obagi made true on its promise. Now, thanks to Obagi Skin Care and genetics from Grandma Susie, I am pretty happy with my skin. Give it a try and you will see the transformation.

Five Good Habits to Maintain Our Soft and Flawless Skin

January 30th, 2009 No comments

By: IC
The following good habits are actually shared by most dermatologists as their best advices for a clear complexion.

Good Habit #1: Avoid Too Much Cosmeceuticals

Numerous experts have said that with more and more beauty potions with alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), antioxidants, salicylic acids, and retinoids in them, blending a cleanser from one line with a scrub or daytime moisturizer from another, then a night cream from yet another can lead to over-exfoliation as well as irritation. This can no doubt add up to a real dilemma, especially for those women who have olive and darker complexions. This is also possible for women who are more prone to discoloration when their skin is irritated.

So, to play it really safe, it is important that you only stick with one line of products. But, only use the line of products which are formulated to work together. It is often said that if for instance you use any prescription products like the famous Renova, the advice of your dermatologist is highly needed. Ask your specialist regarding on how to mix prescription treatments with the over the counter cosmeceutical products. Just dont overdo beauty products.

Good Habit #2: Consider a Healthy Exercise

Exercise is great for a beautiful skin. So, considering at least twenty to thirty minutes of any aerobic exercise is worth trying. It will give you a glow, as it is often said. One of the supports for this is the fact that exercise boosts blood flow. It is this increased blood flow which will bring more nutrients to the skin. However, it is important to be aware that the accumulation of sebum or oil through perspiration can result in sweatband acne, folliculitis, as well as spiky heat. But, dont worry; there is a simple solution for this shower as soon as possible after shaking your booty.

Good Habit #3: Intimate with the Phone? Dont Be!

Always note that constant rubbing on the mouthpiece may lead to rashes around the chin and mouth. This is what many people have believed, including dermatologists. So, it is important that when talking to somebody on the phone, hold the phone away from those mentioned areas when talking. Also, clean the phone often with a mild soapy solution or perhaps rubbing alcohol.

Good Habit #4: Examine Your Birthday Suit for Spots

When it comes to skin care, any sudden or suspicious-looking mole, bump or other growth on the skin is a reason to see a dermatologist. Nevertheless, as skin cancer rates skyrocketed, having a full body check up by a professional is very crucial. This is especially true for those us living in the baby-oil-and-iodine, pre-sunscreen generation.

Also, it is said that those who belong in a high risk group, meaning having a personal or family history of skin cancer, a lot of moles, fair skin, or light eyes or hair, should consult a specialist for a regular check up. The regular examination should start in their teens and probably no later than age 35. However, even if you do not belong in a high risk group, it is still recommended that between the ages of 20 and 40, people must have a cancer-related check up. The check up must include skin exam and must be considered every three to four years. Once you hit your 40s, start undergoing a cancer-related examination with skin exam every year. Aside from that, it is advisable that you do monthly self-exams in order for you to keep an eye out for changes and growths.

Good Habit #5: Eat Healthy Foods

Healthy foods refer to those that help your skin and body fight against the bad forces outside and inside. You must consider antioxidants such as vitamin A, C and E as they are highly potent for sun damage and fight certain cancers, including skin cancer. This is actually the reason that makes antioxidants essential to your health. Along with this, a well balanced diet is highly recommended. This means making yourself comfortable with a diet filled with at least five servings a day of fruits and vegetables, plus a multivitamin that meets the RDA standards.

January 29th, 2009 No comments

By: cdmohatta
None of us wants to age. Even if that is inevitable, we all want to look young. That is also right because youth has a beauty that is absent in age. How anti oxidants can help you in fighting aged looks? Let us find out.

Anti-oxidants: what are they- our body is constantly attacked by pollution, sunrays and other damaging factors. While saving the body, we produce free radicals. They are oxygen molecules without an electron. These free radicals search around the body for a free electron. They take it from a healthy cell and kill it. That is very damaging to body and accelerates aging. Anti oxidants give an electron to these free radicals and stop them from damaging healthy cells. That is how they protect us from aging.

Anti Oxidants: how to use them. Most of the Vitamins such as Vitamin C, Vitamin E are anti oxidants. You get them from food. Beta-carotene that is a type of Vitamin a is an excellent anti oxidant. You get it from foods such as carrots. You can also take supplements of these Vitamins under a doctor’s advice. Some Vitamins are dangerous in higher dose. Selenium is another anti oxidant. Copper peptide is one more. Some of these anti oxidants are formulated in topical applications and can be used to maintain the young look of the skin. Many Vitamin formulations are available in the market to fight aging looks by application. Choose one carefully that suits your skin type. Speak to your doctor and fight the aging looks. Anti oxidants are our friends.

Skin Care- An Overview Of Treatments For Excess Perspiration

January 26th, 2009 No comments

By: cdmohatta
The main treatments of excess perspiration are - Use of antiperspirants, Botulinum toxin (Botox), Surgery, Iontophoresis, and Anticholinergic drugs. Let us look at them in more detail.

Antiperspirants- this is the first treatment to be tried for anybody with excessive perspiration. Antiperspirants are metal salts, mainly aluminum salts that are used to block the sweat glands and block the sweat from coming on the skin surface.

Botulinum toxin (Botox)- Botulinum toxin paralyzes muscles. That is why it is commonly used to treat wrinkles. Its injections also block the action of the nerves that activate sweat glands to produce sweat. The treatment may be painful for injecting the toxin in the palms or soles of feet, because multiple injections are given with a very fine needle near the sweat glands. If your doctor misses some glands, you will continue to sweat from there. Depending on your response, the injections may be repeated after about six months or more.

Surgery- In common surgical procedure, the sweat glands are removed. In some cases a surgery called Endoscopic Thoracic Sympathectomy is performed in which nerves are cut so that they cannot pass on the message to sweat glands. Surgery cannot stop sweat all over the body but only for certain parts such as armpits or hands. This kind of surgery is now done using endoscopes and is less painful compared to the surgery of earlier times. But with ETS, you may begin sweating more profusely from other parts of your body. This kind of surgery is not preferred by many surgeons and before any surgery you must talk about all possible results and side effects with your surgeon. Surgery is only resorted to if other treatments fail.

Iontophoresis- In this procedure a low current is passed on the affected area. This procedure is mainly used for palms and feet. This is a recommended procedure for hose that do not get much relief from antiperspirants. In Iontophoresis, patients sit with their palms or feet in shallow water through which a mild current is passed for between 20 to 40 minutes. This is repeated every alternate day for five to ten days till sweating is considerably reduced. After that a maintenance schedule is maintained. it is not known how Iontophoresis works, but it is thought that the water and electricity somehow thicken the skin and block the sweat pores. This procedure is not recommended for pregnant women or people with pacemakers or any metal implants in body.

Anticholinergic drugs- these drugs act by blocking the action of chemical messengers in the body that activate the sweat glands. As the action of these messengers is blocked, the sweat stops getting produced. These drugs may have other side effects such as loss of taste, constipation, blurred vision etc. You must speak to your doctor about all the side effects of these drugs.

Wrinkles- Remove Them With Quick Collagen Injections

January 25th, 2009 No comments

By: cdmohatta
Skin and wrinkles-

As skin ages and also with the effect of sun damage our dermal layer that contains collagen and elastin fibers that support the upper skin layer, lose lot of collagen. As the collagen is lost, wrinkles form and cannot be repaired unless the collagen is brought back. This is done by collagen implants or collagen injections. This is a very simple procedure and will give your skin a young look again. Let us find out more about skin and collagen implants.

Types of collagen for skin implants -

You have a choice of human collagen or bovine collagen. The body of most of the people accepts both these types. Your surgeon will decide upon the choice of collagen that has to be used for you.

Collagen skin injection procedure-

In this procedure the doctor will first discuss with you about the types of wrinkles that can be removed with collagen injections. Once both of you decide about the wrinkles, collagen will be injected below the skin near the wrinkle with a fine needle. It is not a very painful procedure. You may feel some swelling for a day or two.

Collagen implants in skin and repetition of procedure-

As collagen is a protein, the body will slowly absorb it. You may need another injection after some months. This also depends upon the location of the wrinkles. Areas that you use very often may need injection earlier than those you don’t use so often. For example, all your face area near your mouth is most used as you speak. That portion may need an injection sooner than other areas. Collagen injections are one of the easiest ways to remove wrinkles and get a young looking face again.

Cosmetics- How To Stop Them Causing Facial Problems

January 25th, 2009 No comments

By: cdmohatta
Skin Cosmetics- Good and also Bad For Some Of Us

Men and women, both use cosmetics. Women use more of color cosmetics that men do not. But men use many after shave lotions, moisturizers, creams and lotions on their face. We all want to look good and young. Some of the ingredients may cause skin problems that may take a long time to disappear after treatment. Isnt it better to know about them?

Skin Cosmetics And Allergies-

Skin cosmetics may cause two types of allergies - Irritant Contact Dermatitis or Allergic Contact dermatitis. With irritant contact dermatitis, the inflammation of the skin develops because of contact with any ingredient. Suppose you touch an alkali, you will damage your skin. That is irritant contact dermatitis. No cosmetic contains such harmful ingredients, but even a most neutral material such as water can cause it in many people if they are in touch with it for long. With allergic contact dermatitis, you get an allergic flare up as soon as you come in contact with an ingredient. Why you develop that allergy and your friends do not is not known. There is another issue here, that of phototoxic materials. You are all right if you apply something and do not move out in the sun. As soon as you move out the material causes phototoxic reaction on the skin. Most of the pure and natural essential oils of the lime family cause that.

Skin Cosmetics- Which Of Them Should You Use?

Anytime you buy a cosmetic, read the label of ingredients carefully. If you know about any of them that may cause dermatitis in you, do not use that product. Always perform a small test by sing a new product first on the wrist and watch for reactions for twenty-four hours. Always buy hypoallergenic and anti comedogenic products. Identify all those ingredients that you are worried about and avoid any product that contains them. Save yourself from skin inflammations and colored patches and blisters.

Beauty Problem - Skin Tags

January 24th, 2009 No comments

By: cdmohatta
As we grow older skin starts coming out with different growths and spots. Skin tags are one such product of ageing. The exact cause of skin tags is not known. They are also known as Acrochordons. Skin tags look like small growths hanging with a stalk. These fleshy bumps are ugly in appearance and cause lot of mental discomfort compared to physical.

Skin tags appear at different places on the body. The common areas are necklines, below the breasts, underarms, groin etc. Skin tags may appear in different sizes. Small tags appear in a bunch, while large tags appear alone. They normally form in cluster of small tags of about a mm to big ones measuring up to a cm.

Consult your doctor about removal of skin tags. Your doctor will remove them with a suitable method that may be either of these four- surgically cutting them, by freezing them, by electro surgery or by tying a suture around the stalk. The choice of removal method depends upon the location and the size of tag and the stalk. The tag removal normally does not lead to any scar formation. The healing is over in a day or two. Please consult your doctor for more details.
